Spain: news about labeling

Materials, Packaging

The Real Decreto 1055/2022, effective from 29th December 2022, introduces new packaging labelling regulations aimed at improving recycling and reducing environmental impact. Packaging must include marks and symbols to inform consumers about proper waste management. While some of these requirements will become mandatory in 2025, others remain optional.

Among the optional information is the SCRAP - Green Dot symbol, which indicates participation in an extended producer responsibility system. It is also possible to include details such as the packaging material, its recyclability level or the percentage of recycled content, provided these claims are certified by accredited bodies. Now, let's explore the mandatory requirements!

Changes coming in 2025

From January 2025, specific labelling requirements will be mandatory to optimise waste collection and promote the circular economy.

The container or fraction for disposal should be indicated on the packaging with the symbol "Recycle". Compostable packaging must include the statement "do not litter in the environment" and comply with specific standards such as UNI 13432:2001, while reusable packaging must indicate participation in the Deposit, Return, and Refund System, if applicable.

The regulation prohibits the use of terms such as "environmentally friendly" or similar, to prevent behaviours that might encourage littering.
These rules represent a crucial step towards more responsible and sustainable packaging management.
The use of recycling symbols makes waste disposal easier for consumers and offers several benefits:

  • Enhances corporate image and product reputation.
  • Improves the quality and management of collected materials, reducing costs.
  • Encourages recycling among citizens, raising awareness of sustainability.
  • Supports waste reduction and enhances packaging recycling.

A simple action with a significant impact on a more sustainable future.
